I am someone who suffered a massive hit to infamy when upgrading my boat from mk5 to mk6, but has now climbed back out of that dark hole and has a higher infamy than ever (closing in on nightmare). This is not a ‘woe is me’ post because I’m now doing better than ever before.

My view on matchmaking is that we should revert back to old match-making system which only took account of infamy.

    Here is why:
When I was a mk5, I fought mainly other mk5’s and some mk6’s. I was competitive and comparable with the those Mk5’s, so even when I fought the mk6’s and lost it didn’t matter because I could regain the infamy when fighting Mk5’s again.

When I upgraded to mk6, I was then suddenly fighting mainly mk6’s, with only the odd mk 5. However as these mk6’s were more developed in terms of weapons etc, my boat was comparatively underpowered, and so I lost about 1400 in infamy (to about 2000 to 2200) even though I tried my hardest. I then was getting reduced rewards, and so (even though I had a lot of parts ready for upgrading) I could not afford to build those better weapons and keep up training crew members. So whilst you see Mk5’s and Mk6’s down at low infamy, they are still seeing mostly boats of the same level as themselves and lower level boats are the exception.

I suspect that many of the mk5 and mk6 boats down at low infamy are in a similar position. Seal clubbers aren’t bothered by low rewards, as they just use real cash to upgrade their boats. The disincentive system does not punish the correct people.

I was at a low ebb, and considered quitting the game. I could not see a way out. I wrote about my experience, but was accused of whining by the trolls. (thanks for that guys, I really hope that I have sunk you many times on my climb back)

However, I was fortunate enough that I could buy some sugar, and I upgraded a blast cannon to T4. I bought my way out, and now I am higher than I’ve ever been in terms of infamy. I know that others won’t be able to spend the money like I was able.
If we reverted back to the old system for matchmaking:
    • There will not be the infamy drop ‘penalty’ that many suffer when upgrading boat level
    • Higher level ships at low infamy would fight more lower level ships, but as a result be able to regain infamy quicker, and therefore climb out of the infamy levels associated with lower level ships
    • As a result, once it settled down, ships would be more regularly fighting ships of equal strength
    • Seal clubbers would still exist at low levels, but they would stand out more because the genuine players would have regained infamy it would then be easier for devs to punish them
Someone memntionee changing matchmaking to a ‘you only fight ships of the same level’. In my opinion that would completely disincentivise anyone from upgrading their ship, and probably force anyone doing to either get the cash out or quit the game.

I know many may disagree, but as I say, I’ve ridden that rollercoaster and am only back out the other side by spending money.

The game has some flaws, but like you said, it has awesome gameplay. Just focus on being the best you can be and beat the odds.
