Every once in a while I run across a ship with an "I" inside a diamond... which is a great indicator that they will be superior to everyone else in battle. What does it mean?

that means that they are in a fleet with someone else on that team. (roman numerals). You should see 2 people that have that "I".
Sometimes there are 2 fleets in which case there will be 2 people with a "I" and 2 people with a "II"

Thanks... though that doesn't necessarily answer why they are commonly more skilled than the rest of the players in the math, unless they are able to coordinate tactics with each other outside of the game. I forgot how valuable that is in other TDM games.

Usually people like to fleet with another player who in their eyes got good skill. People usually don't want to fleet with bad players since they will cause them to drop. So that's why most of the time it will look like they got more skill. And on top of that, they most likely got better teamwork too.

I can name a few names of really good players around the 3000-3500 infamy, and I can name ALOT of bad/unskilled players at the same range. Chances are that you are more willing to fleet with the good players;)
