This isn't a thread to bash the game or say how it's not ready, please don't post that here.
I hope I'm not reposting something either. These are just thoughts in my head.

    Anyways......

So I've been trying to figure out how to make the game have a true competitive and fair feel to it. Here's what I've come up with.

    Tournament Mode:

    Best of 3:
1st match: teams ban maps until only 3 are left. Once the 3 maps are decided, 1 team will ban a ship, the other team bans a class weapon (cannon, mortar, torp, etc)
Once all of this is decided, teams have 5 minutes to formulate a strategy and equip their ships.
    Play.
2nd match: since no map ban is needed, whoever banned ships, now bans weapon and vice versa. 5 minute strategy and build.
    Play.
3rd match (if needed) : last map played from the unbanned list.
NO BANS. all ships and weapons are available.
    Play.

Winner moves on or just enjoy the victory.
For best of 5, 3rd and 4th match, repeat 1 and 2...5th if needed, repeat match 3.

    I think it'd work.

Not sure about the ban rules. Banning a ship is more important than banning a class of weapons.

The team that bans a ship in the second round has the advantage, since they have an immediate idea of the enemy team's strength in the first round, while the other team needed outside knowledge in order to ban effectively. If the second-ban team lost the first round, there's a high chance of a third round. If they won the first round, the tournament is probably already over. Since the third round is played on the same map as the second round, whoever won that round would probably win again, despite the lack of bans, which would likely still be the second-ban team. It might be different in practice, but a tournament where the first-ban team wins the first and third rounds seems like it would be a rare event. Either one team wins by a landslide (first two rounds), or the second-ban team wins.

I might just be overthinking it, the ship ban thing bothers me when there's only 5 ships available. This would have to be a Nightmare-only mode, minimum, since that ban would instantly cripple a lot of people. Why don't you just have multiple specific-weapon bans and leave it at that?

    I see your point.

The reasoning I had was, with the ship ban, it would force players to be efficient at more than 1 ship.
Take for example, porthos. I know he's a solid defender. I may consider that since taking down a 13k hp ship may not be our play style. But the first team would know our strengths as far as weapons and would give them the chance to rebuttle in the next round depending on the match. And if it goes to a third round, then everything is on the table and hopefully enough information has been gathered from both sides to make an explosive final match.

As far as the maps, each round is played on a different map. Say 1st round is damage depot. I would ban shooters and torpedoes. Next round is chill zone and maybe speeders and mortars. Then third round, it's crash and burn. No ban.

The idea is force players to not be 1 dimensional and prove why they're the best. We all know who the speeders are and fixers... but can they run a shooter well or enforcer?

I agree that our ships are limited...maybe just banning a weapon class each round is more viable. Idk. Just running ideas through my head.

    Thanks for the input though.

I'm not even sure if it's a good idea to force people into using multiple ships. That would probably happen anyway, since tourney players would gain reputation on their mains, but ships do have to be upgraded separately. People would have to spend pearls to change their crew trees between rounds, or be a little underpowered if they're forced onto a ship they weren't ready for. Not that big of a deal, but it's something to think about.

There's also the possibility of "permabans". If people are given the ability to make their own teams, hard opinions on what's overpowered or what the top strategies are can rise up. Instead of encouraging diversity, it might end up in a situation where the same ships, weapons, and maps are banned in every tournament.

    Ok. I see your point.
I'm looking at it from csgo and Lol perspective.
You usually the same ban of characters in LoL and maps for csgo usually go the way of teams who are and aren't good at a map.
I'm starting to lean towards no ship ban but I think weapon ban and map ban would work until more ships are hopefully introduced.

I agree with Netsa on his points. The map bans make sense but forcing someone away from a certain ship or weapon type kinda blocks the rock/paper/scissors aspect of the game. I haven't played above 1k infamy yet so I'm still pretty new but I do play ranked Dota/Lol/Smite/Hots/ etc.. so I have some experience with competitive play. Another thing to keep in account is the added time for bannings, if the lobby system takes another 10 mins just to start a match that would be a pain for the players.

The ship ban, probably not a smart idea. Weapon and map ban, definitely.
But the thing about a lobby taking a while... maybe 5 minutes. But anyone who has played any competition or tournament style knows there will be down time. Before and after a match.
The thrill of your mental game needing to be on point to win 2 out of 3 matches can be draining and usually is.
If a tournament is serious enough, you'll need the time before a match to make sure everyone is on the same page, has the right setups, right gear, right perks, right crew member training. All of that is taken into account.
Think of the commentators trying to analyze the bans and maps. Talk about strengths and weaknesses. It would be epic to see.
