    He's currently first, that doesn't mean he has won.

    However, I'd be interested to know more about this too. Whenever I'm first, I never see this badge on my own profile.

    That just means that that is the highest score of that player this season, not that he/she would be the leader of the season. Everyone's season best should be shown in their profile, but because of a bug it is currently not. That will be fixed in the upcoming update.
