The defender contributed slightly more because of extra fire damage. He boosted the damage of his friends, and gets part of this extra damage added to his contribution.

He was probably just a hair above the limit for 2 stars, and you just a hair below.

A cannon hitting a target on fire (sitting in napalm, debuffed by flare or firebomb) will do more damage..

    Consider these two scenarios:
    1. Player A hits Player X for 1000 damage with blast cannon.
    and
    1. Player B launches napalm near Player X.
    2. Player X sits in napalm
    3. Player A hits Player X for 1000 + 200 extra fire dmg = 1200 total damage with blast cannon.
Player A now did 200 extra damage because of the fire buff provided by Player B.
The actions of Player B increased the Damage of Player A. This counts as a positive contribution for player B, and is part of the (secret) star calculation. Star calculation is not as black and white as "your total damage" and "your total heals".
