How are stars distributed?

    I've had some weird battles where people who dealt lower damage get more stars but have the same ship as the other people on the team. I'm just wondering why that happens and how stars are disturbuted.

    You earn stars by contributing. You can contribute with more than just damage. For example: Setting the enemy on fire allows your teammates to get bonus damage with their cannons. The bonus damage they are getting adds to your contribution. But setting the enemy on fire will only give you bonus contribution if it helps your teammates deal more damage. This is also the case with freezing enemies, stunning enemies, healing allies, etc.

    These non-damage contributions do not show on the final results which is why you see someone above a player who did more damage than them.
