I've played a fair share of games with the
Guardian... I'll share a bit of what I've learned here.
As far as basic strategy goes, nothing is more important than staying with your team. This way, they can benefit from your teals, and you can benefit from their firepower. Try to avoid going solo, you are a slow ship with little offensive power.
For loadouts, there are a few good builds to run. As
@JoshW said,
dual defense walls is an incredibly difficult nut to crack. If you'd like to support your teammates in a variety of ways, try
defense wall/
cleanse pulse/
defense aura. This lets you deflect damage and offer cures and/or reductions to pesky frosts, stuns, and burns. You could sub in a
bolster armor instead of the wall there, but I prefer the wall. For blue items, either
dual shields/
turbo or
shield/
bandage/
turbo are solid options. For red items,
carronade/
sniper works well, allowing you to attack from range and protect your teammates from attackers up close. You can replace the sniper with any
torpedo for much the same effect. Burst combos, like
flare/
blast,
flare/
explosive, or
blast/
grenade are a nice offensive one-two punch if that's more your speed, and let teammates with cannons snag some bonus damage off your burning effects. And being a Guardian is all about supporting your teammates, after all.
Fleetwise, a Guardian/Fixer tandem provides unrivaled support power, but can leave your team a bit empty-handed in terms of guns. Fleeting with a hit'n'run speeder or enforcer makes things interesting, as they can dish out devastating amounts of damage and return to you for some cover to regenerate behind or debuff removal.
