I have a VERY basic question. What is DPS, why is it important? I see it mentioned everywhere and am tired of being uninformed.

    Damage per second.
    Damage divided by cooldown.

So DPS stands for damage per second. So if I got a weapons that does 100 damage and it has a cooldown of 10 seconds, then my total dps will be 10 DPS.
So to answer your question, it’s important because it lets you know how much damage you are capable of contributing to your team. The higher your DPS then the more damage output you can give. Obviously shooters will have the highest amount of DPS buuuut the other ships can make up for it because of their specialty slots.
A speeder can stun and nitro to waste time and a shot on a shooter, making the shooter’s battle DPS lower than expected.
Ex: because if I have a shooter that I should expected to do 10 DPS for a 5 minute round then he is expected to deal 300 damage for that round. But if a speeder makes him miss a shot and stuns him for let’s say 20 seconds, then his DPS will be 270, and he will be performing lower than expected

Note: crit chance is not included in DPS, because it is a chance.

An enforcer can keep its DPS up because of their yellow slots
Fixers because of their green slots
And defenders because of their immense health

It’s worth mentioning that DPS can be quite misleading, because firing ‘continuously’ isn’t always possible.

A good example is the Standard Cannon, which has one of the highest DPS stats in the game, because of its short cooldown; but in practice, global cooldown (GCD) from other items, and aiming time mean that you’re rarely able to hit it. So it’s real world DPS is usually lower than that of Blast or Sniper.

Another good example is the Railgun, which is notoriously difficult to aim, and find targets for at the correct distance. So the chance of being able to fire it again the moment it cools down is quite low.
