    it seems like the only time i get 3 stars is when i put up +8K dmg with 2+ kills. I'm still trying to figure out how the game determines pearl rewards...

    If you look at your stats, you may have got all 5 last hits, but your damage is only barely above the rest of the BOTH teams. So realistically the stats show you only did every so slightly above average. 3 stars (as seen in the above screencap) come from vastly exceeding the average of the rest of the players.
