I'm interested in how you interpret Apple's clause in a way that exempts Battle Bay's Premium and Epic Chests.

"Apps offering “loot boxes” or other mechanisms that provide randomized virtual items for purchase must disclose the odds of receiving each type of item to customers prior to purchase."

    My interpretation:
    Are these loot boxes? Yes
Are the varying rarities (epic item/legendary piece) randomized virtual items? Yes
Are these loot boxes purchased? Yes
Therefore, the odds that the buyer receives an epic item or a legendary item piece from a Premium Chest must be made available to the buyer.

Even though the chests guarantee a certain rarity, they have the chance at a higher rarity. You can call it a "bonus".. but it is undeniably a potential way to purchase the higher rarity item with the odds attached.

I'm not going to go into legal stuff here since I'm confident Rovio has more than enough lawyers to deal with this kind of legislation. However, I posted my comment as a fellow player and customer - not as a legal expert - and explained why I disagree with you in this particular case.

What you gonna do about it if they don't want to tell you the odds? Perhaps they should just remove the line "OR BETTER" from the chest and no longer give away any stupid "bonuses", right?

    Heya -

I’m not sure if maybe some previous answers have been missed here.

We always work together closely with our app stores - both apple and google. So, not only do we make sure we are in compliance with their guidelines ( otherwise games and updates wouldn’t get past review stage ) but also do we work together in understanding and setting standards in general.

For the current topic of showing odds - it’s already been planned long before the Forum discussion ^^ and we gladly share - so simply stay tuned :)

Thanks! I wish that woulda just been said from the beginning. :p

Now I just want to try to guess the odds correctly.... 5% chance for an epic item instead of rare and 1% chance for a legendary piece instead of epic.

I think this is a juridical problem, because from the legal point of view you don't buy the lootboxes directly for your money. First you buy pearls (and this is not gambling), after that you can spend them for example for boosting the training and not necessarily for gambling with lootboxes. That's why I think for lawyers it's hard to prove that even this form is still gambling, as otherwise the game punishes you with an extreme slowly progress. But from legal point of view Rovio and all other game studios are secured.

With enough statistical evidence from the player database and what pearls are being used for this "smart, sneaky" bypass can be counter argued.

I don’t think that’s even an issue. It’s fairly common for gambling sites and establishments to use some kind of token instead of money. Casino chips are an obvious example.

Most regions define gambling as a wager using ‘anything of value’, which would likely cover all real, and technically virtual, prizes.

I'd hate to see them apply this regulation in an overreaching manner, such that it would apply to random loot drops from mobs in an RPG, for example. That would be my fear this is taken to the reducto ad absurdium level that seems to happen whenever governments try to regulate things they don't know much about. ;)

In this case, Grim has come out to broadcast that the odds will be published in a future update, and we can have a whopping big megathread discussing the numbers with lots of juicy math and statistics when that update drops. Should we just let this thread ride off into the sunset?
