    Step 1 - fight rewards
Ok, here’s my hypothesis, deliberate tankers do so because they can get better rewards by lowering their infamy for easier fights.

Fight rewards are based upon a mysterious formula of which captain level and contribution in the battle are factors. As long as deliberate tankers manage their infamy correctly, they can get higher rewards than they could at their true infamy level.

My solution is to remove the link between captain level and rewards, and instead create a link between infamy level and rewards. At the same time, make infamy a higher factor in rewards than contribution in the fight.

    Step 2 - league rewards
Some players deliberately try to avoid promotion to the higher league, as they can get better rewards from finishing high in one league (without getting promoted) than they can from being lowly placed in the higher league.

My solution is to a) give much better rewards in the league for players who get promoted (ie create the incentive for promotion)
    b) league rewards for lower league position places to improve.

If this was implemented, I think that deliberate tankers would progress much slower and in (hopefully) more cases would feel incentivised to play hard. We could then get rid of the current system of punishing tankers, which can be manipulated and also sometimes catches players in a downward, inescapable spiral.

Things that happen when I play at the top of my game.
    • Wins become much harder and when they occcur they give me 1 star and sometimes 2 star with commensurate drop in gold & sugar.
    • Guild questing becomes a lot more difficult. Right now I use U-20 gear for that. At 1300 infamy I'd need substantially better.
    • I may get marginally better rewards of some type from somewhere... if so, I'm not sure where or when it occurs.
I don't so much "tank" as I do deliberately play below my capabilities. That's enough to keep my infamy also below it's natural max and in a more comfortable zone. What would stop me doing that is, as you say, an incentive structure which promoted higher infamies rather than lower ones. Honestly I think questing is the biggest incentive to maintain low infamy by far... at least down at my infamy ranges. That and wanting to play with my son drive my infamy down to ridiculously low levels.

Honestly the league rewards seem kind of pointless to me. That may be an artifact of my low infamy but I struggle for blue parts more than anything else and the only place to get them is the shop. What would hands-down strongly motivate me to want to play at higher infamies is more blue parts. I assume you could swap that for green parts for lower level captains and purple parts for higher level ones.

Should be common parts for Challenger 3 and uncommen for Challenger 2 1 and warrior 1 then rest blue until ace 2 and epic and legendary for nightmare. The amount should also scale up.

Some scheme like that would certainly motivate me... but not in the league end rewards. A box of 150 blue parts wouldn't even be noticeable in terms of how many I use. Worse, I could simply climb up the ladder until I got the award I wanted then go ahead and tank again. I'd like to see awards more directly tied to the performance in each battle and scaling noticeably with infamy.

So far I've never found the shop to supply enough blue parts, or even green parts. For example when leveling up an item from 40-50, it takes 2 of the biggest batches the shops will offer for a single level up, so it just winds up being yet another way Rovio controls how fast you can progress in the game that is unlikely to change.

I get that. But if they expend all their motivation on P2W players then they have no leg to stand on when us F2P people maximize whatever motivations remain to us. The bottom line remains. I stay at lower infamy because it makes sense to do so. When I think I have the gear to break into the 1700's or so I'll make a push trying to get past the idiocy at lower infamies.

I feel like league promotion isn't that great too so I'd rather stay in ace 2 finish higher than to finish lower in ace 1 lol. Maybe increase the rewards of pushing infamy, this will at the same time discourage infamy tanking.
