There is fallacious form of argument called ad hominem, where instead of addressing the points and facts, the arguer seeks to undermine their opposition by attacking them personally, rather than thier argument.
That’s all I’m seeing here from the people defending sniper. Instead of talking about the weapon’s capabilities and how much that’s worth, they are attacking people personally. Calling us liars and cheats, saying we don’t know how to play, etc...
I could, also, turn this very same form of argument around, and start saying it is they who are the liars and cheats. They know thier weapon is OP, and they want to keep it that way. I could say that they are the ones who don’t know how to play, and that thier infamy would drop if they weren’t being propped up by an overpowered weapon.
Yes, I do play Speeder. But that’s not why want sniper nerfed. If that were the case then I would also be arguing for mines and carronade to be nerfed. I friggin hate mines! They are really annoying for speeders. But I understand they have a function and a purpose, and that if I hit one, then I get what I deserve.
I don’t just get killed by snipers, I’m often fighting very close to other ships, so most of the time I’m killed by Blasts and Explosive Cannons. I get caught out all the time by Carronades, and Enforcers/Defenders running Flare+ Blast/ExC combos. All those weapons are brutal, but I never feel they are ‘unfair’. If I get mauled at close range by a carronade, then all I think is ‘Damn! That guy came prepared!’.
Yes snipers are good against speeders, and yes maybe speeders ‘should’ be punished for scouting out in the open. But that doesn’t mean the weapon isn’t OP. A few seconds on someone’s Rader doesn’t warrant losing two thirds of your hp to a hail of sniper crits. Some damage: certainly, but thousands of damage stacked: that might be too much. Especially given how easy it is to aim.
If I hit a big torp and took thousands of damage then I could understand, it’s slow and hard to aim. But sniper is the fastest and easiest weapon in the game.
Even if we disregard all of that, and say it’s completely fair, and speeders should take thousands of damage within seconds of being sighted. Then there should be some pay off when you aren’t sighted. When you sneak up and get within Carronade distance.
But sniper is also brutal at that distance. No other weapon has that. Carronade, Blast, ExC all brutal up close, but when there are no close ships, you can’t go pummelling nametags on the distant horizon with them.
That’s my problem with sniper, it’s too good at too many things, for only one slot. Which is why I think it needs a nerf. If people want a weapon that does everything then that should be very expensive: either two slots, or with a very long cooldown. If people want a cheap weapon that’s only one slot, then it shouldn’t do everything (it shouldn’t even have a ‘chance’ of doing everything). If you want to cover all your bases then you should spend the slot points on a balanced selection of weapons. Not just one slot point on a weapon that does it all, and then fill the rest up with spammable torps and mortars.
Bottom line is. You can say what you want about speeders, attack us personally, call us cheats, call us liars, say we’re OP, say we can’t play. But none of that, absolutely none of it, proves that sniper isn’t also overpowered.
