Shield Defense vs. HP

Can someone explain: Shield Perks specifically Defense
A] How adding ship perks like Defense affect damage you receive? (I know defenders have more as a base stat. vs. say speeder)
- or the math behind the difference?
B] Which is better HP perks or Defense Perks?

 

If your defense is 50 and your get hit by a weapon that does 100 damage you will take 50 hitpoints in damage instead of 100.

Defense and hp are both great but depends on your boat and playstyle.

For example, I am a defender with 50 defense. I have 8000 hitpoints. A sniper that does 400 damage could crit me which would normally do 1000 damage (400 x 2.5). But since I have 50 defense, that amount is reduced to 875 (350 x 2.5).

Now let's do some math.

8000 hit points would normally be taken away by 8 critical hits from that sniper.

(400 x 2.5 = 1000 x 8 = 8000)

But since I had 50 defense...

8 sniper crits from that sniper left me with 1000 hit points.

(400 - 50 = 350 x 2.5 = 875 x 8 = 7000)

So while 50 defense doesn't seem like much it can be very helpful.

Now that you know how defense works, you decide which is better for your boat and playstyle

 

dmg you take = dmg received - defense points
If you have a defender. You can run 16 Epic 150HP perks or 16 Epic 9 Defense point perks
So your choice in general is something like, do i want to take 154 less damage per hit, or have 2400 extra HP(Its actually more cuz it gets multiplied when added to the ship)

 

SHIELD defense subtracts the amount damage of damage per projectile, owning to the perk you have equipped (quite useful against carronade) For eg +7 points to defense will subtract 7 from each projectile, so useful against multi projectile weapon like missile (not much) or carronade

Although overall SHIELD HP is always the better choice

 

The maximum defense a defender can have is 100

Point to defense is not quite useful currently. As porthos a long time ago, if it affects stun duration /frost. People might equip it

 

It is actually very good and I'm planning on switching all my hitpoint perks to rare + epic defense perks as I find some

 

I don't think many people know that defense points cap at 100 since it doesnt state it in game. You should spread the word

 

Can u explained me everything about critical damage and all?

 

A critical hit is when you get lucky and your cannon shot does double damage. Snipers can do this more often than the other cannons can.

There are also perks you can equipped to your cannon-type weapons to increase your chance of critically damaging your target

 

And what are the base probabilities of crit damage?

 

1% without perks on all cannons except sniper. 15% on sniper without perks if crew fully trained

What item do u prefer in your setup?

Bandage or big shield? Or both?

 

Depends. One of those is a 1 slot and the other is a 2 slot item

Big shield is the first choice, if you have 2 slots spare. My mk5 shooters has big shield equipped..
