Unsolved mysteries: Flare gun

    Flare gun's ticks vary in damage no matter what situation you're in. Something that has made me wonder for a while, but since I had watched many flare gun gameplays it was nothing abnormal to me once I started using flare gun.

    But the question is why? Sometimes my flare gun can drop as low as 58 or 57 damage in a tick and sometimes it can do as high as 80 or 79 in a tick.

    So now we hypothesize... Why this inconsistency?

    1) Maybe it varies from your first hit. If it hits low say, 20 but your actual damage is 50 maybe some ticks will be higher so the average damage per tick is the same as your actual damage.

    2) Maybe it's just completely random but stays near to your flare gun's actual damage.


    NOTE: this is not a rant, complaint or anything of that sort. I am very happy with my flare gun as it is now. Just a curiosity I have :D

    Have you observed the distance between you and the enemy ship while you hit them with the flare gun?

    Was there any difference in distances between you and enemy ship when you observed the difference in DPS?

    I think it works with same mechanics as that of Rail Gun, 100% damage delivered only from a specific distance..... and it decreases as you proceed towards the enemy ship. :)

    No, been using flare gun for a while now, it's random no matter what range

    Damage does not depend on distance I already asked this question to Miika and he said the damage variation is +/-10% and is completely random.
    See my EC does 779 and 12% for burning but sometimes it does 824 924 880 720.

    Defense points come into play most of the times and the 10% variation but honestly it doesn't depend on anything atm. Maybe they can change it like for torpedoes if it hits dead Centre of ships 100% damage slight variation from centre and the damage will be reduced by % depending on where it hits.

    This is what I think about the first hit: Let’s say your flare gun does 50 damage per sec for 17.5 secs. The first hit should do 25 damage (damage for the first 0.5 sec of the 17.5 secs). If the duration is 17.1 secs, the first hit will do 5 damage. I’m not sure if this is correct, just my observation :oops:

    My theory is that the dmg fluctuates in a way, but at least it'll always do close to the dmg on ur fg

    But the damage tick is for every second so each tick should be around the range 45-55

    I meant only for the first hit. Since we always see the damage of the first hit is much lower than the subsequent damage per second. Or, is the 0.5 sec (just for example) does no damage and got neglected? :confused:

    Is the less initial damage of flare gun compensated by heavy damage in last couple seconds? (i don't use flare gun so i don't know:p)

    I was a flare gun user before and I have seen my flare gun did single digit damage on the first hit, and the subsequent damage per second was ~30 until the end. That’s why I suspect that the first damage is the damage from the 0.X second.

    I think it is that way....
    Overall average damage is balanced by fluctuating DPS.

    Have you considered mathematical rounding? Your flaregun does 50% damage when hitting the target the first time, then the next five ticks are spent rounding it off.

    That's same as bandage. Nothing serious abt it. The average dmg still remains the same. o_Oo_O
