    Anyone know what they do? I have the option to increase it by 2 or increase my standard shield by 25.

    Yo. it will deduct the damage from the hit of the weapon. like if i have standard cannon damage of 200, and if you have defence rating of 30. the damage you will receive will be around 170.

    So is 2 really worth it then or should I go for the shield

    That all depends on whether or not you use a shield, if you don't use a shield then go with the +2 Defense.
