Explosive canon vs railgun

Explosive canon is actually really easy to hit with because of its high shooting curve. This means that sometimes you can shoot over the waves. It's also a really good weapon to use against those annoying speeders. And on top of that, it has got splash damage as well.

Railgun on the other hand, it's hard to hit with because it shoots in a straight line. On top of that it has got a really long cooldown, and it's also weaker at close range. But railgun compensates this with its raw power. Railgun is a really great weapon for finishing of opponents, especially when enemy team has got an annoying fixer.

(I'd also like to know wich of them is the best choice if you could only use either railgun, or explosive canon.)

I use railgun, i voted explosive, because in no sense is it the the ultimate weapon as described in description. AM developing a explosive myself.

 

I am a Mk3 Defender, which has room for a 1-slot weapon and a 2-slot weapon. For my 1-slot, I have an Epic Cannon. I have both a rare railgun and a rare explosive cannon. I have tried both, and I picked the railgun for various reasons. 1st, it works great for a long range weapon, my cannon's range being limited. 2nd, I like having a quick cooldown weapon and a long cooldown weapon, I discovered this works great for me. I tried the explosive cannon and determined I do not need to limited range cannons. Maybe when I get to higher leagues this will change, but for now, I like the railgun.There are more things I could say about both, but I am too busy to type them all.

 

Legendary ExpCan is quite nice
I would prefer it over the RG because there is a good chance to get extra damage by hitting multiple targets with the splash damage.
All my experiences with RGs are bad, it's so infuriating trying to lead a shot at exactly the right time over the waves while staying far enough away to get decent damage, especially on subzero...

 

Have stated it in every post about about RG, its like a useless weapon in sub zero and crash n burn

 

Meanwhile, The ExpCan has made subzero my favorite map I can hit and dodge easily with the cannon arch

 

I'm torn I like the explosive cannon a lot..I think honestly explosive cannon early in game because it is easier to level sooner (if you have the copies) later game I imagine the Railgun becomes quite useful as BuzzKills talent tree becomes more available after about captain level 25ish.

 

The same is for the ExpCan. Bhurt only starts upgrading the ExpCan at lvl 21. Both items are good at late game

 

Worst thing about RG, DAMAGE reduction upto 30% in close range. Explosive much better to handle speeder at close range, except a powerful railgun can break Tesla shield with sheer power, but would you waste a 22.2 sec shot on it??? I think not

 

Well, they're not the same so a direct this or that isn't really possible imo.

The rail gun is a weapon of opportunity, you see a ship out, the waves are clear, you take the shot and do a ton if damage if a wave doesn't grab it.
The explosive cannon is... A 2 slot cannon.

Man! I loved both on my shooter when I was coming up. But now that I play enforcer I can't use either. :'(

I use both but I like the rail gun a little more. it's so satisfying to nail people with it.
I'm currently using a rail gun on my mark 5 speeder and I'm getting good kills
I can zip up to a optimal position zap someone and then move away without getting too close

 

Enforcer can use either until MK5 once upgrading to MK5 you would be wasting a slot point...so you'd have to calculate whether it was worth wasting damage potential of three weapons vs. two based on your skill with it.

 

I think the Rail Gun looks enticing when you see the big damage, but it has too many problems. On top of the long cooldown, it also takes longer to aim, since you usually have to wait for a gap in the waves, so I expect it’s practical DPS is considerably lower than its theoretical (if it’s even ready when you need it). Then also losing damage up close... I just don’t think it’s worth it, when you could fire another gun twice. Possible exception being on a fixer, where you might not want to keep dividing your attention between shooting and healing. The rail gun gives you a way to get all your damage out in one huge shot, so it might be preferable if you want to spend most of your time focusing on green and yellow items.

The exploding cannon, on the other hand, does much more DPS in practice, since it also has the splash, which is too fast to dodge. I think it’s probably one of the better weapons for farming stars for that reason.

Leading targets with rg is also hard, if you aim manually even slightly vertically, the shot will be a miss. I use rg on my shooter and practised using it for the first two months. But now, I get really good hits with it, usually speeders scouting and defenders (they are soooo easy to hit )
