WHAT ARE DEFENSE POINTS?

Your reply is much appreciated! I have a Epic Big Shield with 827 HP and the ship has 25 defence and 2470 total heath. I have a choice of perks, 1 with +5 defence and 1 with +100 HP. With your calculation the +5 defence (totaling 30 HP) would be my best bet for the duration of a battle where I would be taking heavy damage. If my math isn't too rusty. Thanks for the help!

Yup, no problem.

 

There is a problem with this working out though. This is very subjective to the types of weapons you are being hit by. If you are going to come up against lots of regular Cannons and Carronades etc. then Defense will be more and more useful, yet if you are being hit by railguns and torpedoes, then health will be more effective as you will only block X amount per shot.

Obviously a mixture of both is ideal, but health would be the MOST effective, because due to the nature of how defence works (more effective the more hits you take) defence becomes more and more valuable AFTER you have a large health pool (can be hit more and more before dying).

 

Defense points is a carronade's worst nightmare.

 

i think they are only to protect you from cannons i have perks for them so people do less damage to me haha

 

Defense has no effect on fire damage at all
if you get tagged with a flare or ride through a napalm and have 1000 defense points you will still burn just as much

 

They just resist damage.
A hit worth of 100 will deal 95 if you have 5 defense points

I constantly encounter players with incendiary weapons, and thus defense would serve well.

 

Defense points do NOT affect burn damage.

I run napalm, I have run flaregun, and I used to run grenade, all of which I have used on defenders with 30+ defense. All of them do the same amount of damage to defender as they do to speeder.

 

Um, tapping on the defense stat tells you that defense doesn't affect incendiary/burn damage.

 

Welp. Ima earn some pearls to remove my defense perks, then sell them because I'm broke right now

 

Defence, Shield, Health really ends up being the same thing in the end, but would you really waste a perk spot say on a shield for a little defence or would you rather use a shield hit points perk ?

 

FWIW, I don't know for sure but I've been having this question recently and so been paying a bit of attention. It sure seems like my flare is hitting for full damage but I haven't gone back through videos and really counted the damage up.
