this game is awesome, but i play it for both the action, as well as the item progression.

the item progression has pretty much stalled. getting 1 box for 15 stars is ludicrous and really off putting. if you're getting 1.5 stars on average, then that's 10 attacks. 10 attacks is 30-45 minutes of actual playing time. all for a green box that often doesn't give you anything useful.

on top of that, you get 2.5 quests per day, which have the potential for cash / sugar, but only 4 additional boxes per week. basically, my items aren't upgrading much if at all. the game should increase items.

any other suggestions? i've been buying a lot of common items and scrapping them and hoping for rare and epic pieces, but i'm not sure if that's a good move or not.

I wouldn't go for the common items. They aren't worth the cost imo.

I found it was the most cost effective (so far) to collect items I plan to use later from boxes, including duplicates, then scrap the rest. I can juggle items for all my ships at the moment, though I hear things will get tighter later.

If you are fairly active, you can get rare pieces at a decent rate. Epics are hard to find. Keep in mind the box is sort of a bonus? :p

I largely save my gold now for ship upgrades and item pieces. I often find rare (sometimes epic) part pieces in the shop so thats where most of my gold goes. Occasionally I buy some rare parts, or a helpful perk. Keep in mind that you can eventually buy rare parts outright, though this is expensive.

I feel ya about the lack of progress, but including automatic boosts can also come with problems.

but what level are you? i'm level 20, infamy 500-600, and i can't buy any of the items because i already have them. so i can only buy other items and scrap them to get pieces to possibly get an upgrade that would be beneficial. for example, i already have a blue sniper; i can't buy another blue sniper so the only way i can get another blue sniper is to get it through pieces, which i buy at the market, and sometimes get when i scrap pieces.

are you getting better results somehow?

I am lvl 22 infamy 1600+, I just play my ass off to get the gold and stars needed to get the pieces and pieces from the market. It is difficult haha takes a lot of time, but that is how it is. Um i tried the common thing, but it didnt get me anywhere. If u end up having a lot of gold, might as well

ok - thanks. sounds like your plan is more like mine than buying the weapons outright...

Level 20, infamy 700-800ish, working my way back up to the 1000s ever so slowly. :p

I don't really buy items from the shop, just perks/part pieces, and occasionally bits to upgrade items. I've slowly accumulated a number of rares, and a couple of epics (of which I only ever use one, due to playstyles). I would suggest scrapping low tier items you don't intend to use, and save most duplicates you get of the same rarity as your useful parts. It will take time, but after a while you start to hit critical mass. I usually don't have a lot of gold to spend on buying brand new items tbh, though I am making an exception to save for some specific rares I don't have yet..

If you have your gold full most of the time at the moment just buy all parts available in the shop, never play with your gold in full capacity.
Later down the road you would not have enough gold for upgrades, buy and keep parts as they will always be in shortage if you are still playing this game months after this.
Buying a random full item from the shop to scrap only when you hit the wall with not enough power cell for evolve. It's not worth the gold to try to scrap a full item for pieces.

At lower level make sure to pick up every single rare+epic item piece you can afford.

But yes gearing is frustratingly slow (by design as to stimulate spending).. It does however add some enjoyment to those rare moments when you actually luck into something useful!
