    Newbie here.
When selecting between weapon upgrades or ship hit points, which do you prefer?

I would say go for the damage on the cannons because those are weapons you will use at all points in the game.In other crew training if you don't plan on using that weapon now or in the future only then go for HP.But if you feel like changing after the training is completed you can retrain for 10k sugar.

It's been a while since I last did a retrain on one of my crew but I don't think you need to spend additional sugars for any retraining. Only have to wait for an hour.
But not really relevant since sugars are not in shortage most of the time for majority of the players.

I'd definitely say go for the hp. You can't do damage if you're dead. Also at your level 50 hp is a lot of hp to pass up on, and each of those talents can add up quickly. When the enemy is switching through targets on the opening salvos they'll always start with the lowest hp person if possible. So starting out with a higher hp pool will make you much less of a target and allow you to put your damage out. When you get to a higher level and 50 hp isn't much of a factor, then I'd say go for more damage output.
