How can anyone do that? Your ship is completely customizable by you, with items, perks and crew training. How to play a ship depends on what abilities and stats you end up with.

    Well said.
It depends on your play style.
Shooter: Decent health, lots of damage
Defender: Tank, Lots o' health, not so many weapons
    Enforcer: Support/Tank-ish, damage, evader
Speeder: Pretty much same concept as enforcer
Fixer: Decent health, not so much firepower, healer

Not sure what you're looking for. There's so many ways to play this game, so many set ups, so many ways to train your crew, equip perks...
Just hard to answer your question.

There are some general statements that can be made, regardless of your item loadouts. Its also worth checking out Genki Gamer's video on the best ships for each level.

Shooters should avoid being front line combatants. Mid to long range items. I know I'm not an expert, but really? They don't have any yellow items or high base health. Smart opponents try to take them out early, so....

Enforcers and Speeders are speedy "support" ships, though they are entirely capable of strong damage themselves. They need a couple of yellow item slots to be effective though, and are harder to use properly than many seem to think (not talking about forumers here).

Defenders are up-front combatants, but they need to have their allies nearby to make up for their less spectacular damage in a team fight. Long range weapons are much less helpful here.

Fixers are team medics. Your green items are not for healing yourself after escaping ill-advised escapades. Your job is to keep as many of your allies alive as long as possible. Don't run out to save the idiots who suicide into the enemy team. You start out pretty squishy, honestly, so you need to be conservative with your own damage output.
