Am I not doing this right?

The problem with that game was that the whole of the opposition was ready for you. You engaged too early.

You needed to wait until they engaged the main fleet of your team and then you could have attacked. At the first sign that you had more than one gun on you, you needed to be out of there.

 

Are you seriously asking what you did wrong? You drove straight into the entire enemy team by yourself before your team ever had a chance to shoot at them. This is called a "Suicide Speeder".


Let's discuss this further to figure out why you thought this was a good idea.

As far as scouting... Let me add this piece of advice... Scouting the enemy team does very little good if your team is not in range to fire at them. It can help a small amount for positioning, but too many times a Speeder goes off to "scout" and gets pummeled.

Sorry for the aggravated response. Suicide Speeders are by far my most hated teammates.

Here is what I would consider the best current strategy for Speeders:

1. Hang back (behind your team) until the enemy team has begun to engage your Shooters/Defenders/Enforcers. If you are the first one seen, you will be the first one fired at. Unless you have a good Tesla Shield and Bandage, this can cripple you for the rest of the fight. If they have Speeders, don't scout at all. You could very easily get killed quickly by the opponent's Speeders.
2. Go perpendicular across the battle at a distance just far enough so that you can hit your shots... Shoot, distract, then retreat to wait for your cooldowns. Don't hang out within range of the enemy team as that puts you in unnecessary danger.
3. If a priority target has low health (specifically a Fixer), you can approach the enemy team from a safe path and swoop in to finish him off, then get out as quickly as possible. This is most important if the other team has a Fixer and you do not. If they don't have a Fixer, you might not want to do this because that player cannot heal a lot by themselves.
4. Always keep an eye out for ways to create positive encounters. If you see your Shooter going 1v1 with another Shooter away from the main battle, go help him quickly. If you see a Speeder coming for your Fixer, go help your Fixer. This is the biggest strength of the Speeder. Rapid re-positioning. Don't attack anyone 1v1 unless you are positive you can win. Try to create 2v1 situations.
5. Stay alive. A Speeder helps out there team much more the longer they stay alive. You might only have 2 weapons, but that could be huge to close a game out.

Those are my main tips for a Speeder. As far as items go... You really want as much burst damage as possible. Grenade + Blast is a great option. Grenade + Explosive is a little better.
